Rajneeshee Cult

  Rajneesh
The Rajneeshee Cult was founded by Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh. Bhagwan emmigrated from India in 1981, to Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, a newly created town in Wasco County. In 1984, the Cult was responsible for the first known bioterrorist attack of the 20th century in the United States. Followers of Rajneesh attempted to control a local election by infecting salad bars in 10 restaurants with Salmonella typhimurium in the small town of The Dalles, Oregon. The attack caused about 751 people to get sick, but no fatalities. In 1991, Bhagwan fled the United States to avoid legal problems, returning to India in his private jet. Bhagwan never served a prison sentence, just a brief time after his indictment. He died in 1995, four years after his return to Pune, India, site of his original ashram.
