Rajini Rajasingham ThiranagamaRajini Rajasingham was a patriotic tamil, human rights activist, and a feminist. She was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka to middle-class Tamil parents. Like most of her peers she studied and entered the Faculty of Medicine in University of Colombo to study Medicine in 1973. These were troubled times and being a socially conscious young woman she was actively involved in the student politics of the time. During this time she met a young politically active lecturer from the Kelaniya University called Dayapala Thirangama whom she later married. After graduation while most of her colleagues went on to lucrative medical practices or jobs abroad Rajini returned to Jaffna as a lecturer in anatomy in the newly formed Faculty of Medicine in the Jaffna University. By this time Jaffna was almost a battle zone in the fight for the liberation of tamil people of Sri Lanka and most sane people were leaving Jaffna to the comforts of Colombo or migrated to countries like UK Canada Or Austalia. All the hardships of living behind the battle lines did not deter her from dedicating her life to the Tamil people she loved to serve. She was a determined young woman and an idealist who feared nobody, sadly this quality lead to her untimely death. She dared to criticise the Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Elam headed by Velupillai Prabhakaranlink title in a book co authored with three other dons titled Broken Palmiah.http://www.tamilnation.org/books/eelam/hoole.htm A few weeks later she was shot dead by LTTE gunman while riding her bicycle to work. 1 Dr. Rajani Thiranagama: Her contribution to the University Teachers for Human Rights (U.T.H.R.)http://www.uthr.org/BP/volume2/AppendixIII.htm 2 DR.
