Railroad Buff

A railroad buff, in the United States, is a person who enjoys riding, photographing, and studying railroads and railroad trains as a hobby. Generally the term railroad buff describes someone interested in mainline railroads; that is, conventional freight and passenger trains. Those interested in urban transportation systems, including rapid transit, streetcars, and other electrically-powered transportation are usually described as railfans. To a large extent, the terms are interchangeable. Railroads buffs and railfans often specialize in particular areas of interest. Some prefer current systems, others past ones. Some prefer particular countries, systems, lines, or technologies. Some interest themselves in any combination of related activities, including collecting memorabilia, ephemera, or even pieces of operating equipment, the latter usually in private museums. Many study rail history, and quite a few write articles and books on th subject. A significant number of transportation professionals are also buffs or fans. Many railroad buffs and railfans are also involved in Rail transport modelling as a hobby.
