Questions Of Civilization

  Claremont McKenna College
Questions of Civilization is an innovative required course for freshman at Claremont McKenna College, one the members of the Claremont Colleges, which uses revered texts of literature, philosophy, and religion to allow students to discover and discuss the tenets of humanity and society. Led by W.M. Keck Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Robert J. Valenza, professors for many academic disciplinces led this exploration into the intellectual and social basics. The course also provides a common academic experience for each class for each year a set of common text are designed. Nevertheless, the course is not without its critics. Some students have complained that the course attempts to do too much and ends up teaching nothing. The course is a combination of literature, philosophy, and religious studies, though it too often ends up as none of the above. The class has, with reason, often been called "pointless" and "a waste of my time."
