Qarshi

Karshi is a city in southern Uzbekistan. It is the capital of Kashka-darya province, covers about 28,400 km2, and has approximately 177,000 inhabitants (1994). The city is at least 1000 years old. It was originally called Nakhshab. It was renamed in the 14th century, when a Turkish fort was built. The fort was named Karshi, the Turkish word for fort.
