The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. Its county seat is Unionville6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,346 km² (520 mi²). 1,341 km² (518 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,223 people, 2,228 households, and 1,517 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 2,914 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.14% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,228 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.90% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.83. In the county the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 24.00% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 20.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $26,282, and the median income for a family is $32,031. Males have a median income of $22,957 versus $18,884 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,647. 16.00% of the population and 13.20% of families are below the poverty line.
