Proto ManProto Man is a video game character from the Mega Man series by Capcom. Proto Man ("Blues" is his original Japanese name) is the early prototype of Mega Man that made his first appearance in Mega Man 3 (NES, 1990). He has a grey and red (in the earlier titles a white and red) uniform and a yellow scarf (in the earlier games a bandanna). He wears a red helmet with a silvery decoration and a dark visor which prevents anyone from seeing his eyes. He always appears before his distinctive whistle. http://www.mmhp.net/Sounds/whistle.wav Beyond their armour and personality Proto Man and Mega Man are supposedly completely identical (or that is the image that many fans of the series wish to give although Proto Man has never actually removed his helmet in the official Capcom Mega Man titles). Proto Man is sometimes considered as a typical "mysterious anime character" though it is because of this air of mystery why fans adore the character. Capcom has never revealed the precise past of Proto Man or even why the character didn't appear until the third game. This has obviously lead to speculation. Cartoon Proto Man Proto Man's first game appearance, Mega Man 3, was adaptated for animation in the episode "A Tale of Two Dogs". However, Proto Man did not appear in the episode. In the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon, Proto Man is evil and is Dr. Wily's main henchman who follows him and assists him anywhere. Although Proto Man's looks are faithful to the original, he acts punkish and sarcastic. Most of the time, he goes battle Mega Man personally. Him and the blue bomber are aware that they are "brothers", even though in the cartoon Proto Man was fully rebuilt by Wily from a prototype. Still, Proto Man proved that he had some good in him, but the animated show was stopped before more depth was acquired. Quotations - "I hate to say I told you so but... I told you so."
- "Don't strain your brain, Wily. He'll come back. He always does."
- "Boy, what's the world coming to when you can't trust your own brother?"
- "Give me that, you robo-twits!"
- Proto Man: "After you." Mega Man: "Excuse me if I don't trust you, Proto Man, but I want you in front of me where I can see you." Proto Man: "Ooo, I'm hurt. Suit yourself."
- "Ten four, Supreme Space Cadet Sir!"
- Proto Man: "You escaped Wily's trap, but you won't escape me!" Mega Man: "Now that's no way to greet your brother." Proto Man: "Well, manners never were my strong suit."
- Dr. Wily: "I just love it when an evil plan comes together!" Proto Man: "Well then you're gonna really hate this."
- Dr. Wily: "Hold him off while I escape!" Proto Man: "Think again, Doc!"
Personality Debate There is also some debate over Proto Man's lineage. Many sources, including the Mega Man cartoon by Ruby-Spears, tend to claim that Proto Man is evil. This debate has been further fueled by the way Proto Man tends to make his appearances (usually fighting with his brother). Mega Man 5 caused severe complications (Proto Man leads a robot invasion and abducts Dr. Light) though the ending was very plain about the issue (it was actually an illusion-making robot called Dark Man set on by Dr. Wily). The official continuity currently dictates that Proto Man is in fact a good guy. Trivia Proto Man's name is often spelled incorrectly by Mega Man fans even though that Capcom's official stand on Mega Man names is that all Mega Man names are to be written with a space (except for the Japanese names as the Japanese language does not have/use spaces, despite this even Capcom tends to write its character-names incorrectly). This popular way of writing the name as "Protoman" originates from the earlier Mega Man titles where the translation was sometimes a little dodgy (and involved little space to fit a "between" space). MegaMan Battle Network ProtoMan is Chaud's NetNavi. Unlike MegaMan and his friends, ProtoMan is seemingly emotionless. Since he is purely a fighting NetNavi, all he does is follow Chaud's orders without question. Since he met MegaMan, ProtoMan has often wondered about how an operator should care for his NetNavi, though they have fought several times with each other. Maybe through their rivalry, ProtoMan could learn about the values of friendship. Throughout their times together in later months, it seems that Chaud and ProtoMan has developed a bond with one another, similarly to Lan and MegaMan's "Full Synchro", and it was that bond that saved ProtoMan when he used a DarkChip and nearly turned to the dark side. ProtoMan is a powerful ally, even if he isn't much of a talker. Megaman NT Warrior Much like in the game for the 1st two seasons. in the third, he & Chaud managed to pull off Cross Fusion themselves. However, during the fight with ShadeMan, ProtoMan use the Dark Chip & to beat the NetNavi. But, the chip's evil got to ProtoMan, who joined Nebula for awhile until Chaud freed him from the Chip's control. Special Note - Sometimes, Proto Man is called "Break Man". This is from the Mega Man III game where Proto Man, confused (or wanting to test Mega Man), fights Mega Man regularly in some stages. After that the blue bomber has defeated all the robot masters and Doc Man, Proto Man bursts in for a final fight, wearing an additional red mouthpiece and he is displayed as "Break Man". Fans have long speculated if this was a different robot who was a clone of Proto Man by Dr. Wily or if it was Proto Man only disguised with a pseudonym. - There have been suppositions that Mega Man X is actually Proto Man upgraded. X is supposed to be the first robot to feel, think and make his own decisions and yet almost all the robots in the original Mega Man series seem to already do that anyway. Proto Man being the first and Mega Man having been dismissed by Keiji Inafune for being X, some fans suppose that Break Man is indeed Mega Man X.
