Property Ladder

The Property Ladder is the range of domestic property available within a particular area or country. According to this metaphor, cheap houses for first-time buyers are at the bottom of the property ladder, and expensive houses are at the top. 'Getting on to the property ladder' is the process of buying one's first house, in the hope of leaving it for progressively better houses as one's salary rises. With the high price of houses in the United Kingdom in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it is often said that younger people have difficulty in getting onto the property ladder.
