Proper Length

In physics, proper length is the length of an object or a contour as measured in the reference frame of the object itself in the context of special relativity. It is important to specify the reference frame because of Lorentz contraction. The proper length ds in a general geometry may be calculated from the metric tensor. The proper distance between two points A,B is the proper length of the geodesic that connects A,B (usually a straight line).
