Project Liberty ShipWith the backing of the National Maritime Historical Society, an organization was formed in 1978 to work toward the preservation of the Liberty ship SS John W. Brown, then serving as a nautical high school operated by the City of New York. However, when the ship's career ended in 1982, the group could not locate a berth in New York habor that would accept her, and she was towed to the James River Reserve Fleet in July 1983. The group continued their efforts to preserve the ship. A law was passed in Congress transferring title of the ship from the Maritime Administration to Project Liberty Ship. Application was made, and accepted, for listing of the ship on the National Register of Historic Places. The John W. Brown became a "National Register Ship". Late in 1987, the project gave up on New York and turned to Baltimore, where as of 2004 the John W. Brown operates as a museum ship and cruise ship. Mission of Project Liberty Ship Project Liberty Ship is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Liberty ship SS John W. Brown as a living memorial to the men and women of American industry who built the great Liberty Fleet and to the merchant seamen and Naval Armed Guards who sailed the ships across all the oceans of the world.
