Progreso, Yucatn

Progreso is a port city in the state of Yucatn, Mexico, located on the Gulf of Mexico in the north-west of the state at , some 45 minutes north of the state capital of Mrida by highway. As of 2003, Progreso has an estimated population of about 45,000 people. Progreso is a center for both the fishing industry and the container industry. All containers arrive in Progreso and are distributed to Yucatn, Campeche and Quintana Roo. Progreso also is the new port for large cruise ships, who usually stop for 24-36 hours and the passengers can visit Progreso or Mrida. There is a nice beach walk and many fine resturants located along the "Malecn" boardwalk along the beach. During the months of July and August the beaches fill with thousands of national and international tourists.
