Pregnant Ranma ProblemIn anime fandom a pregnant Ranma problem refers to any discussion of the mechanics or logistics of a token gimmick, or plot device that would normally be governed by suspension of disbelief. The term often carries the suggestion that rather than the 'problem' following internal logic or mood of the series, it is treated too realistically by fans or is out of scope. The term originated from the anime and manga series Ranma , famous among anime fans. As a result of a magic curse the titular character, Ranma Saotome, changes sex if splashed with cold water, and is returned to his male form by hot water. This is mostly featured as a comedic device. Presumably the first time it was asked, the not-particularly rigorous biomechanics of this curse were considered irrelevant by Rumiko Takahashi, Ranma's creator ("I don't think about that, and neither should you," to paraphrase). Nonetheless debates about Ranma's feminine biological issues ("Could Ranma become pregnant as a woman, and what would happen?") were rampant on fan newsgroups for years, and was sometimes met with criticism at being a newbie sort of question. Many older fans find the question annoying, although it is generally not considered a trolling question. Other fans chose to approach this exact question, and other sorts of pregnant Ranma problems in Ranma fanfiction. Note that this is different from a question merely never answered by a writer, or purposely left open to invite discussion or playfully troll the audience. See also cartoon physics.
