Precursor (Star Control)

The Precursors are a fictional race of beings featured in the sci-fi Star Control computer game series. Like so many Science Fiction universes, the Star Control universe has his own ancient, long-lost civilization. The Precusors are to the Star Control universe as the Atlantis-saga is to humankind since the ancient Greeks and Plato. Precursor relics are commonly found in the region of the galaxy where the Star Control saga takes place, including ships and devices required for completing games in the series. The Precursors inhabited Star Control space approximately 300,000 years before the 2150's, the time period of Star Control II. Both their origins and subsequent demise are shrouded in mystery. On some planets they inhabited, they left knowledge tablets containing the imprint of valuable technological relics. These are age-old, still functional devices left in stasis cubbies by the Precursor cultures. The most famous of the Precursor finds was on the planet Vela II where an entire Precursor base has been discovered. Physically, the Precursors were shaggy giants, probably somewhat similar to wooly mammoths. This is shown by the size and setup of the Precursor ship, the Vindicator, flown by the protagonist in Star Control II. Additionally, the Slylandro gas bags have given a description of them that matches this conjecture. It is widely believed that the Precursors left the Star Control region of space heading towards the galactic core. As they departed, they left behind the many artifacts and several rainbow worlds, aligned in an arrow-like configuration pointing at the direction of their departure about 235,000 years ago. The Precusors are based more-or-less clearly on the Progenitors, a semi-mythical race of beings featured in David Brin's series of science fiction books taking place in the so-called "Uplift Universe."
