Powhite ParkwayThe Powhite Parkway in Richmond, Virginia is a toll road operated by Richmond Metropolitan Authority (RMA). An extension, also tolled, is operated by the VDOT and is signed as Virginia State Highway 76. The Powhite Parkway extends from a complex interchange with the Beltline Expressway which is Interstate 195 and the Downtown Expressway, another RMA toll road. After crossing the James River, in addition to local roads, the parkway offers major exits for Virginia State Highway 150 ( known as Chippenham Parkway), U.S. Highway 60 west of Richmond, and Virginia State Highway 288 in the Midlothian area of Chesterfield County. Most traffic for U.S. Highway 360 west of Richmond is accessed by State Highway 288. The name is pronounced "POW-hite," in the same manner as you pronounce "Powhatan" and "Powder." The original portion of the Powhite Parkway was completed in 1973. The extension was opened in 1988. Both sections were financed with toll-revenue bonds. It was named for the Powhite Creek which flows into the James River juts upstream from the Parkway's bridge. References to the creek by this name have been found in records more than 300 years old, and the creek probably was named by Native Americans who were in the area long before colonial settlers arrived in the 17th century.
