Powervr

PowerVR is a subsiduary of Imagination Technologies, a UK company. They rose to prominence in the 1990's PC market by designing a popular line of 3D graphics chips. They were just involved in the design of the chips which they would sell/licence to other companies such as NEC. They were not involved in the manufacture or sale of products. The primary competitor to the PowerVR set of 3D chips in the late 1990s was the Voodoo series from 3Dfx. However, both these lines of chips were eventually brushed aside by ATI and nVidia in the PC market. The second generation PowerVR2 chip found a new lease of life in the Sega Dreamcast console until that stopped production in 2001. With the high end PC market secured by ATI and nVidia, PowerVR in now concentrating on the mobile market with its latest design, the low power PowerVR MBX.
