Poulsbo, Washington

Poulsbo is a city located in Kitsap County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,813.

History

Poulsbo was officially incorporated on December 18, 1907. Founded by Norwegian immigrant Jorgen Eliason in the 1880's, Poulsbo was originally settled by a large number of Norwegian and other Scandinavian immigrants because of its similiarities to their native countries. Named after Paulsbo, Norway, a mistake on the application for establishing a post office resulted in the town being officially named Poulsbo in 1886.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²). 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.53% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,813 people, 2,845 households, and 1,772 families residing in the city. The population density is 819.5/km² (2,121.5/mi²). There are 2,992 housing units at an average density of 359.9/km² (931.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.10% White, 1.01% African American, 0.97% Native American, 2.99% Asian, 0.43% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 4.58% from two or more races. 4.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,845 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.92. In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and under, there are 78.7 million males. The median income for a household in the city is $38,875,000 and the median income for a family is $15,353. Males have a median income of $40,482 versus $27,899 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,649,000,000. 91% of the population and 82% of families are above the poverty line. Out of the total population, .1% of those under the age of 18 and 2.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
