Portage Lake (Keweenaw)

Portage Lake is located in Houghton County, Michigan, in the western Upper Peninsula. The lake is a part of the Keweenaw Waterway, a partly man-made waterway across the Keweenaw Peninsula. An arm of the lake lies between the towns of Houghton and Hancock where is is crossed by the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. At the south end the lake connects to Lake Superior through the Portage River. At the north end a canal was cut through Lily Pond to allow ships to pass through, avoiding the sometimes treacherous route around the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The primary tributary to Portage Lake is the Sturgeon River. The lake is also linked to Torch Lake, which is fed by the Traprock River.
