Port Leyden, New York

Port Leyden is a village located in Lewis County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 665. The Village of Port Leyden is mostly within the Town of Leyden, but part of the village is in the Town of Lyonsdale.

Geography

The Black River divides the community. Port Leyden is located at 43°35'2" North, 75°20'39" West (43.583871, -75.344261). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.58% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 665 people, 257 households, and 169 families residing in the village. The population density is 427.9/km² (1,099.5/mi²). There are 317 housing units at an average density of 204.0/km² (524.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.50% White, 0.15% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 0.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 257 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.08. In the village the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males. The median income for a household in the village is $24,559, and the median income for a family is $30,781. Males have a median income of $31,146 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,783. 23.7% of the population and 18.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.9% of those under the age of 18 and 20.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
