Popery Act

A British Penal law, passed in 1704 and amended in 1709, requiring Roman Catholics to divide their land equally among all sons. This diminished Catholic land holdings. Catholic land holdings:
  • 1688: 25% of land
  • 1704: 14% of land
  • 1776: 5% of land
