Pope Leo V

Leo V, a native of Ardea, was pope for some thirty days in 903 after the death of Benedict IV. He was succeeded by Christopher. Elected while a priest. Leo's pontificate occurred in the darkest period of papal history. He was deposed and murdered, presumably strangled by Christopher, who was in turn executed by Pope Sergius III in 904. original text taken from the 9th edition (1882) of a famous encyclopedia.
