Polyprotic Acid

A polyprotic acid is an acid that can dissociate to release more than one proton (hydrogen ion, H+). The first proton is the easiest to dissociate from the polyprotic acid, and each subsequent proton is less likely to dissociate. Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is a polyprotic acid. It has three protons that can be released, and as the polyatomic ion loses protons, the dissociation constant changes such that releasing a third proton is less likely than losing a second proton, and much less likely than losing just one proton:
  • First
    • H3PO4 → H2PO- + H+
  • Second
    • H2PO4- → HPO2- + H+
  • Third
    • HPO2- → PO3- + H+
