Polson, Montana

Polson is a city located on the shores of Flathead Lake in Lake County, Montana. It is also on the Flathead Indian Reservation. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,041. It is the county seat of Lake County. The city was named after pioneer rancher David Polson.

Geography

Polson is located at 47°41'17" North, 114°9'24" West (47.688089, -114.156766). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,041 people, 1,739 households, and 1,052 families residing in the city. The population density is 575.7/km² (1,490.9/mi²). There are 1,977 housing units at an average density of 281.7/km² (729.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.25% White, 0.15% African American, 16.11% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 4.50% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,739 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% are married couples living together, 13.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.86. In the city the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 86.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $21,870, and the median income for a family is $30,833. Males have a median income of $21,113 versus $19,210 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,777. 19.8% of the population and 16.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.5% of those under the age of 18 and 12.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
