"). Slogans are effective political devices especially in a heavily mediated context. They often summarize the essence of a platform effectively, as in 1884 when the
United States Republican Party
attacked the
Democrats
as "the party of rum, Romanism, and rebellion". The Democrats were anti-
prohibition
