Pokmon AbilitiesPokmon Abilities (also referred to as "Traits" or "Characteristics") are a new feature that was introduced in Pokmon Ruby/Sapphire. These are not to be confused with personality type ("nature"), which can modify a Pokmon's base statistics, nor with the attack techniques ("moves") a Pokmon can learn. Rather, an Ability can be thought of as an extra, innate trait distinctive of one or more species of Pokmon. For example, the ability Rock Head nullifies the recoil damage from techniques that also damage the user when performed, such as Double Edge and Take Down. Abilities have many diverse effects. Usually, a single species of Pokmon has only one ability associated with it, but several have two. In the latter case, it appears that one of the two abilities will be randomly assigned upon capture. Many abilities are assigned to certain species of Pokmon according to their Pokdex entries; for example, Grimer and Muk have the Stench ability because they smell absolutely foul, while Meowth has the Pickup ability because it is known to hoard shiny objects. A list of Pokmon Abilities is as follows: A Effects of the weather (either natural or induced by the moves Rain Dance, Sunny Day, Hail or Sandstorm) do not affect this Pokmon. Any of the weather-changing attacks attempted while this Pokmon is in battle will fail. The abilities Chlorophyll and Swift Swim will not work while this Pokmon is in battle. Compare to Cloud Nine. Pokmon with this ability: Rayquaza The opposing Pokmon (wild or trained) cannot run from battle nor be switched out. However, Pokmon with the Flying type, the Levitate ability or knowledge of the Baton Pass attack may leave from battle normally. Compare to Magnet Pull, Run Away and Shadow Tag. In Pokmon Emerald, if a Pokmon with Arena Trap is placed first in the trainer's team, the chance of encountering a wild Pokmon while in grass, caves, water etc. is increased to 200%. Pokmon with this ability: Diglett, Dugtrio, Trapinch B The opponent's moves cannot score a Critical Hit on the Pokmon with this ability. Compare to Shell Armor. Pokmon with this ability: Kabuto, Kabutops, Anorith, Armaldo When the Pokmon's HP is below 1/3rd of its maximum HP, the base damage power of its Fire-elemental attacks increases by 50%. Pokmon with this ability: Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion, Torchic, Combusken, Blaziken (essentially the Fire-type starter Pokmon) C When the weather is sunny due to the use of the Sunny Day move, the Pokmon's speed stat is doubled.
