Pokharel Etymology The name Pokharel (also spelled Pokhrel) is a fairly common surname (family name) in Nepal that is derived from the word "Pokhari" which means pond. It is similar to the name of Pokhara, a city in West Nepal surrounded by lakes, but there is no direct relationship between the Pokharel family name and the city of Pokhara. Types There are at least two main Pokharel clans, divided into Brahmin and Chettri castes. Names overlapping two castes are rare and it is not known why this name is shared by clans within the two castes. Some believe that it is due to the fact that caste designations were regularly changed by the king. Political Family A Kathmandu branch of the Pokharel clan forms a prominent political family closely linked to the centrist Nepali Congress party. It traces its origins to the Tanahun district of Nepal's Middle Hill region. The family rose to prominence in 2007 Bikram Sambat (1951-52 AD) when members of the family were Nepali Congress party leaders during the bid to overthrow the Rana rulers of Nepal. The family also played a role during Nepal's 1989 Democracy Movement. Since the establishment of democracy, members of the Pokharel family have held high government positions.
