Platykurtic Distribution
In
probability theory
, a
platykurtic distribution
is a
probability distribution
with a
kurtosis
less than that of a normal distribution, i.e., with a
kurtosis excess
γ
2
< 0. In terms of shape, a platykurtic distribution has a smaller "peak" around the mean (that is, a lower probability than a normally distributed variable of values near the mean) and "thin tails" (that is, a lower probability than a normally distributed variable of
extreme values
). An example of a platykurtic distribution is the
rectangular distribution
.
