Piro Pueblo

Piro Pueblo was in the area of Socorro, New Mexico, one of many Native American Pueblos along the Rio Grande. The people were quite hospitable to the Spanish when they first arrived, which resulted in the Spanish giving the area the name Socorro which means aid or comfort. The Piro became more heavily involved with the newcomers than did most other Pueblos, and in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 they fled with the Spanish, being no longer to make it on their own. Much remains unknown about the people and their language. Currently there is a "dig" which is actively pursued annually in June and July, in a location near Luis Lopez, five miles south of present-day Socorro.
