Pickering Airport

Pickering Airport is a proposed international airport to be built in Pickering, Ontario, just east of Toronto. The airport was originally planned to be built in the 1970s but is now projected for construction beginning in 2010. In 1972, the federal government expropriated 18,600 acres (75 km²) of farmland for the project. However, after three years of intense opposition by community activists and environmentalists, the projected was cancelled in 1975. However, the expropriated land was never returned to its original owners causing fears that the government was hoping to revive the project at a future date. Proposals for an airport were revived in 2001 due to projections that Pearson International Airport would be unable to handle Toronto's air traffic on its own indefinitely. Federal lands in the area were again designated an airport site and an environmental assessment commenced. In November 2004, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority officially announced plans to build the airport at a cost of $2 billion. Construction of the airport is projected to begin in 2010 with completion anticipated by 2012.
