Piaras FeiritarPiaras Feiritar (1600? 1653) was an Irish language poet. Feiritar was the Norman-Irish lord of Dingle, County Kerry and was close to members of the Gaelic Irish, Old English and New English communities. It is believed that he may have written poetry in English, but none of this has survived. Some critics have argued that his Irish poetry shows the influence of the English Elizabethans. He sided with the native Irish during the rising of 1641 and, as a result, was eventually captured and hanged by the Cromwellians in 1653 in Killarney. He remains something of a folk hero for the Irish-speaking people of Dingle and his poetry lives on in the oral tradition.
