Photon SoupA project to render an image by simulating the motion of all photons in a room. Originally done in 1991 by Richard Keene in C. It took 100 Sun 1 computers at 1Mhz, a month to render a single image. See the results and source code here http://www.cpjava.net/photonproj.html Recently revisited in Java, now computers are much faster. A few computers simulated 10 times as many photons in a month.
