Phase DiagramPhase diagrams are used in physical chemistry and materials science to show the equilibrium conditions between the thermodynamically-distinct phases, see Gibbs phase rule. For the particular case of the phase diagram of a simple single substance, eg water, the phase diagram shows in Pressure Temperature space, the lines of equilibrium between solid-liquid, solid-vapor and vapour-liquid phases, and their unique intersection at the triple point. A complex phase diagram of great technological importance is that of the iron-carbon system for less than 7% carbon See phase (matter) Mathematical Physics Use. A phase diagram or (more usually) phase space (q.v.) is a useful construct in mathematics and physics to demonstrate and visualise the changes in a given dynamical system.
