Mithridates VI
.
Pompey
had defeated Mithridates VI in
64 BC
and gained control of much of
Asia Minor
, but Pharnaces II attempted to take advantage of the
Roman civil war
to retake territory for his kingdom.
Julius Caesar
defeated him in
47 BC
at the
battle of Zela
, his swift victory prompting the famous words
veni, vidi, vici
. The king was killed in a revolt the same year.
