Phantoms (Movie)The movie Phantoms is a screen adeptation of the novel of the same name by science fiction/horror writer Dean Koontz. The plot centers around two sistera returning to their mountian resort town, only to find that every living creature in the town has mysteriously disapeared. Police and scientists come to investigate, revealing a horrible and ancient evil. the town was built over a hybernating monster refered to as the ancient enemy, an ameoboid shapeshifting slime creature. the enemy consumes other life forms to increase its mass and is able to perfectly mimic other creatures. it is made up of a hive mind and can create small 'probes' imitating consumed life forms to go forth and hunt more pray. in addition the creature can also take any shape it can imagin and absorbs mental capacity of those it consumed. the creature's only vitial organ is a nucleus located in the center of its main body. The creature's cells are oily in structure, similarly shaped to fossil fuels, upon discovering this scientists use oil eating bacteria to destroy the Enemy's core. In the book it was theroized that the Enemy either caused or aided in the extinction of the dinosaurs as well as many of the great mysterious mass vanishings: Mayan civilzation, Jamestown, Ghost ships etc. The creature's abilities and form greatly resembles John Carpenter's The THing, The movie monster The Blob and H.P. Lovecrafts Shoggoths. throughout the book the creature came to identify itself as Satan, due to the minds of the humans it absorbed (noteably a devil worshiper). This absorbtion changed the creature from preditory to sadistic; it engages in a number of non-preditory evils including torture, psychological warfare, blasphemy, profanity, bigotry, rape, and over all cruelty. Phantoms was addapted into a movie in 1998. Starring: Peter O'Toole, Rose McGowan, Liev Schreiber, Ben Affleck, Joanna Going. it was directed by Joe Chappelle and Produced by Joel Soisson, Michael Leahy, Bob Pringle. it is avalable now on video rental and is rated R. the movie is a cult classic and recieved overall good reviews. part of its succesful adeptation from page to film comes from the original writer also creating the screen play.
