peter rachman

Peter Rachman (1920 — 1962) was a London landlord in the mid-20th century. He was notorious for evicting sitting tenants to bring in new tenants on massively raised rents. Rachman was born in Poland in 1920, the son a Jew. He was not interned by the Nazis, but did spend time in a Soviet labour camp before fleeing to the United Kingdom. Rachman soon built up a property empire in north London consisting of more than one hundred blocks and several nightclubs. His policy was to evict the sitting tenants of the houses he bought as they had protection from extortionate rents rises. New tenants had no such rights and so could be charged at amount pleased. Most of the new tenants were Afro-Carribean immigrants who accepted the high rents as they had no other place to live.
