Peter Carney

Peter Carney is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. Carney was born in Dunrea, Manitoba, but has lived in Winnipeg since 1962. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1966. He also received a Bachelor of Education degree in 1968 and a Master of Education degree in 1979; he later returned to academia via continuing education and received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Winnipeg in 1998. Carney worked as a teacher and high-school principal in the St. James-Assiniboia school district from 1966 to 1997. He was also a Board Member of CancerCare Manitoba from 1986 to 1988. Now retired, he sits on the Board of Regents at the University of Winnipeg. Carney chaired New Democrat MaryAnn Mihychuk's successful campaign for provincial office in the provincial election of 1995. In the federal election of 1997, he ran as a New Democrat in the riding of St. Boniface, finishing second to Liberal Ron Duhamel. Carney was elected as a School Trustee in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division in 1999, and was re-elected in 2002. In 2003, he was nominated to run for the provincial New Democratic Party in the safe Progressive Conservative seat of Turtle Mountain in the south of the province, but withdrew before the election. In the federal election of 2004, Carney ran for the NDP in the west-Winnipeg riding of CharleswoodSt. James, an area which has not historically supported the party. There was a close race in this riding between Conservative Steven Fletcher and Liberal Glen Murray, who had previously been associated with the New Democrats. Fletcher won the contest by fewer than a thousand votes; Carney placed third with 4283, or about 10% of the total. Carney, Peter Carney, Peter
