Pete Mccarthy

Peter Charles Robinson (November 9, 1952 - October 6, 2004), better known by his pen name Pete McCarthy, was a British broadcaster and travel writer. Robinson was born in Warrington in the north of England, the son of an Irish mother and an English father. He used his mother's maiden name, McCarthy, to avoid confusion with another writer named Peter Robinson. He is best known for his humorous travel books McCarthy's Bar (ISBN 0312311338, about his travels around Ireland) and The Road to McCarthy (ISBN 000716212X, about travels to remote places around the world in search of Irish connections). In 2002, Robinson won the Newcomer of the Year award at the British Book Awards and the book (McCarthy's Bar) sold nearly a million copies. He followed this book with The Road to McCarthy and was planning a third book in the series. He presented the BBC Radio 4 programme X Marks the Spot and was a regular guest on programmes such as Loose Ends and Just a Minute. He was diagnosed with cancer early in 2004, and died of the disease in October of that year at the age of just 51. McCarthy, Pete McCarthy, Pete McCarthy, Pete
