Pervyi KanalPervyi Kanal or Perviy Kanal (Первый Канал, The First Channel) is one of the few country-wide TV channels in Russia. The Russian government owns 51% of its shares. In January 2001 Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky who controlled most of the remaining shares was forced to give up. Vladislav Listyev, the prominent TV journalist, headed the channel (called ORT or Obshchestvyennoye Rossiskoye Televidyeniye at that time) in the beginning. The channel was formerly known under different names as follows. - Before and during Perestroika: The First Channel of the Central Television.
