PentridgePentridge may also refer to HM Prison Pentridge in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Pentridge is a village in north east Dorset, England, situated on Cranborne Chase on the A354 road ten miles north east of Blandford Forum and ten miles south west of Salisbury. The village has a population of 215 (2001). The name is Celtic, meaning "hill of the wild boar", and its existence was recorded before the time of Alfred the Great, as "Pentric". The village is located amoungst many Neolithic, Roman and Saxon earthworks, notably Bokerley Dyke, a long defensive ditch which was dug by the Romano-British to keep out the Saxon invaders. Nearby is Pentridge Hill, formed by a band of more resistant chalk than the surrounding land. Either side of the hill are deep valleys formed during the last ice age. External links
