Pembroke, North CarolinaPembroke is a town located in Robeson County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,399. Geography Pembroke is located at 34°40'55" North, 79°11'45" West (34.681949, -79.195765). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²). 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,399 people, 961 households, and 611 families residing in the town. The population density is 395.8/km² (1,023.9/mi²). There are 1,043 housing units at an average density of 172.1/km² (445.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 10.17% White, 5.25% African American, 81.74% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 961 households out of which 35.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.3% are married couples living together, 32.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.12. In the town the population is spread out with 34.8% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 75.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 64.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $18,355, and the median income for a family is $21,218. Males have a median income of $26,875 versus $21,510 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,202. 40.7% of the population and 39.9% of families are below the poverty line.
