Pelican Bay State Prison

Pelican Bay State Prison is a California State Prison located in the northwestern part of the state near Crescent City, California on 275 acres (1.1 km²). It is best-known for its Secure Housing Unit (S.H.U.) where inmates presenting serious management concerns are incarcerated. Prisoner advocates have argued that S.H.U. imprisonment is cruel and unusual punishment, due to the lack of stimulation, activity and natural light given to these prisoners. However, conditions are supervised by the federal courts subject to the Madrid consent decree.
