incident
was the largest recorded escape attempt by
slaves
in the
United States
. On
July 12
,
1848
, 77 blacks attempted to flee from slavery on a Washington
schooner
. The failed attempt was part of the inspiration for
Harriet Beecher Stowe
's
Uncle Tom's Cabin
.
