Pclinuxos

PCLinuxOS, often abbreviated as PCLOS, is a GNU/Linux distribution. Centred around a LiveCD, PCLinuxOS is able to work with a USB key, making it a LiveMove distribution. It is also capable of being installed to a hard drive and used like more traditional GNU/Linux distributions. The precursor to PCLinuxOS was a set of RPM packages which could be added to improve numerous versions of Mandrakelinux. The packages were created by an active contributor known as Texstar. From 2000 to 2003 Texstar maintained his repository of RPM packages as part of his Web site, PCLinuxOnline. In 2003 Texstar made a fork of Mandrakelinux 9.2. Working with the Linux LiveCD Project, Texstar developed the fork into PCLinuxOS. Although mostly binary compatible with Mandrakelinux, PCLinuxOS uses the Apt package management system in place of Mandrakelinux's Urpmi. PCLinuxOS has a different focus than Mandrakelinux, with an emphasis on desktop computing in homes and businesses. Texstar has become well known for polishing an already refined interface (that of Mandrakelinux) and PCLinuxOS is no exception.
