Pauline JulienPauline Julien (born May 23, 1928 - died September 30, 1998) was a singer, songwriter, actress, feminist activist and Quebec sovereigntist. Born in Trois-Rivires, Qubec, Julien was the companion of the poet and Qubec deputy Grald Godin, another Trifluvian and sovereigntist. She also worked with Gilles Vigneault and recorded with him. Julien's best-loved songs include "La Manic", the haunting ballad about love and separation in isolated Manicouagan, an area in northern Qubec near Labrador. Diagnosed with a debilitating brain disease, Julien took her own life in late September 1998 in Montral. Julien is still to this day one of the most respected artists in Qubec and elsewhere in the French-speaking world. Most treatments of her life show hagiographical tendencies.
