Passive Safety Feature

A Passive Safety Feature, or Safety System, is a system that works with no human intervention to mitigate the consequences of an accident. One Passive Safety Feature of a Boiling water reactor is the Void Coefficient of reactivity. Basically, as the water in the core boils, steam voids are formed in the coolant. These steam voids moderate fewer neutrons, causing power of the reactor to lower. So, during a loss of coolant accident, the loss of coolant causes the reactor to shut down.
