parkway, oakland

Parkway is a proposed gay village in Oakland, California, situated near the southeastern shore of Lake Merritt. While other gay villages typically develop more fluidly and have a more haphazard history, the redevelopment of the Parkway district into a gay- and lesbian-oriented commercial district is officially being supported and encouraged by the city government. Spearheaded by openly gay Oakland City Council member Danny Wan, the city's vision for the community includes an infusion of new businesses and redevelopment of the area as a gathering place for Oakland's large but widely distributed gay and lesbian community.
