Pamelia, New YorkPamelia is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,897. The Town of Pamelia (formerly called Leander) is in the western part of the county. Geography Part of the south town line borders the City of Watertown. The Black River flows westward along the south part of the town. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.7 km² (35.4 mi²). 88.0 km² (34.0 mi²) of it is land and 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.07% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,897 people, 1,044 households, and 790 families residing in the town. The population density is 32.9/km² (85.3/mi²). There are 1,144 housing units at an average density of 13.0/km² (33.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.20% White, 1.52% African American, 0.66% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. 1.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,044 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.12. In the town the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $37,500, and the median income for a family is $45,500. Males have a median income of $33,050 versus $21,832 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,314. 11.9% of the population and 9.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.1% of those under the age of 18 and 1.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
