Palos Verdes Estates is a city located in Los Angeles County, California on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,340.

Geography

Palos Verdes Estates is located at 33°47'13" North, 118°23'48" West (33.787049, -118.396657). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²). 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 13,340 people, 4,993 households, and 4,119 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,075.3/km² (2,784.9/mi²). There are 5,202 housing units at an average density of 419.3/km² (1,086.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.32% White, 0.99% African American, 0.13% Native American, 17.14% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. 2.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,993 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.7% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% are non-families. 15.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 2.96. In the city the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 19.8% from 25 to 44, 33.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $123,534, and the median income for a family is $133,563. The per capita income for the city is $69,040. 2.2% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.5% of those under the age of 18 and 1.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
