Palhoa

Palhoa is a city in Santa Catarina, Brazil. It is a suburb located aproximately six kilometers from Florianpolis, the state capital. It has aproximately 69.000 inhabitants. Palhoa's has some industries industries such as textiles, and food processing, but the majority of the population works at Florianpolis, which is the state goverment base, with a strong touristical based economy. Palhoa also have some beautiful beaches, such as Guarda do Emba and Pinheira. The main district of Palhoa is called Ponte do Imaruim, with a strong commerce. Palhoa is much poorer than the larger city of Florianpolis. Many people live in slums, and the city has a relatively high crime rate. The major BR-101 highway passes through Palhoa, making the city a gateway to Florianpolis.
