Opposition To CultsOpposition to cults People label various groups "cults" for several reasons. - They are puzzled as to why someone they love (or at least like) would suddenly join an exclusive or reclusive group - and spend so little time with me!
- They feel that the joining is a reflection on us: we're bad, cheap, did'nt love them enough
- They really think the group has false beliefs (see heresy).
- They don't care what the group believes, they just want their friend/son/whatever back, and will say or do whatever it takes to attain this goal (see end justifies the means).
- They disagree with some aspect of the group's doctrine or practices, and figure that painting the worst possible picture of it is the best way to thwart them.
- They can make money deprogramming members of the group (a rare, but potent motive).
- They've bought into someone else's labeling of the group or the science fiction notion of mind control and genuinely want to save the public at large from this "menace"
- They want to save face about joining. Hey, I didn't join this group because I liked the people, doctrine, goals, or activities. They hoodwinked me / brainwashed me.
- They want to save face about leaving. I wasn't brainwashed into leaving, I was rescued from the real brainwashers (see mind control).
- They don't care about the group - its impact on members or society - they just want to sell newspapers / attract viewers, and sensational stories are the best for this.
