opera comique (dict)

Opera Comique

Opra comique is a French style of opera that is a partial counterpart to the Italian opera buffa. Unlike opera buffa however, opra comique generally uses spoken dialogue instead of recitative. Despite it's name, it is not necessarily comic or light in nature. It should not be confused with the Opra-Comique, the name of an opera company (and its opera house) in Paris.
